Prepping your home for sale

Think of it as getting your house ready for a blind date.

  • Trim the lawn and keep it green

  • Shape up shrubs and weed gardens

  • Wash windows, replace screens if they are rusted or torn

  • Remove grease stains on driveway

  • Tidy garage to show off its size

  • Clear driveway and walkways of any snow and ice

  • Add a welcome mat

  • Maintain backyard – if you have a pool or hot tub, make sure it’s clean

  • If you have a pool, take photos on a bright sunny day in case you are selling when your pool is closed

  • Put planters with colourful flowers/plants by front entrance

  • Keep entry, stairways and halls free of clutter

  • Add some fresh flowers

  • Clear closets to make them appear roomier

  • Make sure bathrooms are clean and functioning (no dripping faucets!)

  • Clean and brighten basement

  • Add a fresh coat of paint (choose light, neutral colours for the greatest appeal)

  • Consider replacing carpet if worn or outdated

  • Keep kitchen clean and clutter free

  • If you have pets, treat them to an outing during showings (some people are afraid or allergic)

  • Remove all personal family photos
